Therese Smith CHICOPEE, MA (06/13/10) - After a defeat to open the 2010 season, the New England Mutiny (2-1-2 WPSL East-Northeast) continued their unbeaten 2-0-2 run with a 2-0 victory over Seacoast United (0-3-1 WPSL East-Northeast) at Chicopee Comprehensive High School. After a hectic stretch of three matches in eight days, the Mutiny can now rest before their road match against Northeast Division-leading Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (4-0-0 WPSL East-Northeast) this Saturday, June 19th at Endicott College (3:30 p.m. kickoff).

In the last match between these two opponents - a 1-1 draw on June 5th - New England had a tough time dealing with the Seacoast United offside trap. In this match, the team seemed to take the next step in their evolution with a more cohesive run of play while taking care of their scoring opportunities.

"We played better this game and we won because we were able to capitalize on our opportunities," said Mutiny Head Coach Lauren Molinaro. "We played much better against their trap, which kept drawing us offside last week, even though we didn't actually work on it during the week. Because we played Wednesday night [against the Connecticut Passion], we only trained light this week - some light shooting and possession drills on Tuesday - and we just talked about working against the trap.

"We knew what to expect and our kids are smart. You can draw something on a board for them and they get it. They did a really good job against the trap tonight."

UMass' Therese Smith would notch the eventual game-winning goal (her second of the season) early in the match, taking a pass from Jenny Maurer 15 yards from goal. Smith dribbled to open some space and fired her shot past Seacoast goalkeeper Jill Schott for the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

It would take until the 80th minute for New England to register the insurance goal, as the University of Rhode Island's Alexis Veith would tally her first goal of the season. U.S. U-17 National Team member Riley Houle would send Veith in on a breakaway, and she beat Schott low inside the left corner.

"I coached Veith at URI, and this was only her third game with us, but she's very smart so she knows the system very well," said Molinaro. "She's short, but she plays a very aggressive game and she makes up for whatever she may lack in height with tenacity. Thesese Smith played very well. She was very composed on the goal she scored. It was also really nice to have Chelsea Botta with us. It was her first game since she was medically cleared."

Houle, Brittany Barry and Sarah Brochu all had played their respective State Cup games earlier on this day, and were credited by Molinaro for their efforts. Material from The Republican was used in this release.
