NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 0, BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES 2 Mutiny suffer from the second-half downpour of both the rain and the visitor's offense ENFIELD, CT (06/11/11) - The New England Mutiny (2-1-2 overall, 1-1-2 East-N'East) started strong but would succumb to the second-half downpour of both the defending Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) champion Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (3-0-1 East-N'East) and the rain in a 2-0 loss. Aztec are the reserve side for the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) and proved to be a tough opponent on this night.
Second-half goals from Megan Mischler in the 49th minute and Claire Zimmeck in the 60th minute were enough for the road win for Boston, who now stand on top of the Northeast Division in the WPSL East with a 3-0-1 record after three wins via shutouts from goalkeeper Michelle Betos. The Aztec keeper earned her stripes in the first half, as New England would pressure the visitor's defense but could not convert on the final pass or shot.
After an early 1-on-1 scoring opportunity by Boston's Kiersten Dallstream that was stymied by Mutiny keeper Erica Correa, the home side would pick up the pace. In the 13th minute, Alison Fitzsimmons would get to the end line but Betos would snag her dangerous cross and six minutes later, the former University of Georgia standout would negate a nice interplay between Fitzsimmons and Taylor Hartmann.
After scoring opportunities from Deb Nelson and Kacey Richards in the 20th and 23rd minutes, the Breakers Reserves would eventually turn their possession of the ball up a notch. Elements of their second-half performance would begin to come to the forefront, as Boston started to clinically break down the Mutiny defense. Two chances at goal from Caitlyn Flynn would go for naught. |
Kacey Richards and the Mutiny had a solid first-half performance but were shut down in the second half. RELATED LINKS:

After another turnover in the Mutiny midfield, Zimmeck would get played towards goal and this time, the Boston player would shoot low and nutmeg Correa for the insurance goal and the 2-0 lead. The frustration of the New England keeper mirrored the second-half performance of her side as it took them over 20 minutes to notch a quality shot on the Breakers Reserves goal. A shot from Alexis Veith off a Jenny Maurer cross in the 66th minute would sail over the cross bar. With six minutes remaining in the match, Maurer's free kick from 20 yards out would be corralled by Betos and the match would end in 2-0 loss for the New England. Both teams will face off again this upcoming weekend, as Boston will host the Mutiny at Endicott College on Saturday, June 18th for a 4:00 PM kick-off. New England will have another road match - this time at SoccerPlus CT (0-2-2 East-N'East) - on Monday, June 20th before returning home to face the CFC Passion (1-1-0 East-N'East) at Chicopee Comprehensive H.S. on Saturday, June 25th (3:05 PM kick-off).
