SOCCERPLUS CT REDS 2, NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 1
Two red card ejections is too much for the visitors to overcome in a loss to their long-time rivals

NEW BRITAIN, CT (06/20/11) - It was a beautiful late afternoon kick-off at Veteran's Stadium, but it would turn out to be an ugly result for the New England Mutiny (3-2-2 overall, 2-2-2 East-N'East) as they would drop a 2-1 loss to old nemesis - the SoccerPlus CT Reds (2-3-2 East-N'East). By the final whistle, the visitors would only have nine players on the pitch, although, they still held a match-length run of play advantage in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) East Conference match.

The Mutiny had a vibrant start to the match with quality scoring opportunities for Deb Nelson and Sarah Brochu going for naught, the former beating Reds goalkeeper Shelby Little with her shot but not the far post. In the 20th minute, though, Mutiny defender Karyn Riviere would be harshly punished on a defensive challenge in the Mutiny's final third of the pitch, and would see a straight red card.

SoccerPlus CT's Beth Lloyd stepped up to the spot and calmly finished past New England keeper Jackie Fede for the 1-0 lead. Down to ten players, the Mutiny would continue to carry play. Yet, they would become too stretched defensively and in the 39th minute, Jewel Robinson would dribble in uncontested on Fede and lift her shot over the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

The second half would be a neither-here-nor-there affair between the two sides as the home side tested Fede on a few occasions, but she was more than up to the task. As the half wore on, the pace would pick up in New England's favor as they fought for a goal. Long-time Mutiny member Jenny Maurer would put the visitors on the board in the 77th minute, as she bent a curling & dipping bomb from 25 yards out past Little for the 2-1 score.

Meghan Collins and Kacey Richards would also fire at goal from distance in the next few minutes, but Little would corral their shots. At the death, University of Hartford standout Mary Beth Hamilton would get in on goal from the left flank, but her shot would go just wide of the far post. In another dubious decision, the head referee would give New England's Meghan Cunningham a red card after two yellow card infractions and the disappointing 2-1 loss was in the books.

The next New England home match will be this Saturday, June 25th at Chicopee Comprehensive H.S. in Chicopee, MA when they take on the CFC Passion (1-1-1 East-Northeast) for a 3:05 PM kick-off.
