Deb Nelson scores lone goal of match to notch first win of 2011 for the Mutiny

TAMPA, FL (05/21/11) - The New England Mutiny of the East Conference of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) escaped from five consecutive days of rain in the Northeast and welcomed the 94-degree Florida sun. They also welcomed their first victory of the season, as the Mutiny defeated Tampa Bay Hellenic (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Sunshine) of the Sunshine Conference by a 1-0 score in an inter-divisional match.

A goal by Deb Nelson (Chepachet, RI) in the 72nd minute and a phenomenal breakaway save by Mutiny keeper Erica Correa (Cheshire, CT) were the keys to victory.

"I’m ecstatic that we found the back of the net tonight," said Mutiny Head Coach Lauren Molinaro. "It is the one missing piece. I am proud of the girls' effort against a physical team after traveling a considerable distance. Our defensive backline was very well organized and played excellent."

Nelson took a beautifully timed through ball from Holyoke-native Therese Smith and finished in the lower right corner for the Mutiny’s first goal of the 2011 season. In the 30th minute, Tampa Bay's Stacey Bishop found herself in alone on goal but Correa stretched out and thwarted the opponent's best opportunity of the match.

The Mutiny nearly struck first in the 39th minute when Alison Fitzsimmons got in behind the Hellenic defense, but an acrobatic save from Ashley Baker denied the West Springfield-native from her first goal in a Mutiny uniform. Tampa nearly equalized in the 79th minute as Bishop's shot was headed into the corner of the Mutiny goal, but East Longmeadow's Chelsea Botta cleared the ball out of harm’s way.

The Mutiny's record now stands at 1-0-1 (0-0-1 East-Northeast) and will enjoy the Florida sun and a week off before hosting the Albany Alleycats on Saturday, June 4th at Agawam High School.
